Why I fix the foundation before writing a word

Notes on search

Most SEO engagements start with a content calendar. Mine starts with a technical pass, and I do not write a commercial page until that pass is done. This is not a preference. It is the order the work has to happen in.

Content sits on top of everything else. If the pages underneath it are slow, hard for Google to read, or duplicated against each other, every new piece inherits those problems. You can publish for a year and watch the same ceiling hold, because the thing holding it down was never the amount of content.

Foundation first, in order

The order I work in is fixed: technical foundation, then the Google Business Profile, then commercial pages, then content, then local pages, then links, then AI search. Each step holds up the one above it. Skip the first and the rest crack, slowly enough that it is easy to blame the content instead.

What this looks like in month one

A fix pass on the things that make a site hard to understand: crawl and indexing problems, slow pages, broken internal structure, duplicate and competing pages. None of it is glamorous and none of it makes a good screenshot. It is the part that makes everything after it work, which is why it goes first and why I will not sell the content without it.
